Topic: STOPOVER FACILITY ON MOTORWAY

Thinking about travel and travel necessities, may help all of us cope with the negative psychological effects of the pandemic in these boring days. In order to set the students’ imaginations free of the boundaries defined by the restrictions of the pandemic period, this semester’s project topic is selected as the design of a stopover facility, in motorway travel context.

The students are expected to design a stopover facility based on the provided architectural program, on two alternative rural areas in Central Anatolia. The first one is a highlands region at AkdaÄŸmadeni near Yozgat, which has a valuable vista to the landscape below. The second one is a lakeside location of EÄŸridir, which has a potential of enabling its visitors a pleasing and peaceful stopover experience. The students’ designs are expected to develop considering the geographical issues of climate, altitude, sunshine exposure, beyond the physical and psychological requirements of visitors and the architectural program.

Scope and Method

Arch 202 Arch. Design Studio II is the second step of the chain of design studios. In this phase, students are expected to make an analysis of the Site and Architectural program to establish a language to be used in their design and to accomplish the design of the building. Arch 202 is a non-exam course (Article24-2 of university’s regulation); therefore grading will be made according to the work performed by the student during the term. The term will be divided into stages, each one comprising a different phase of the project. The development of the project will be monitored through panel critics. Students will have to present their work as shown in the timetable and attend all the pre-juries in order to get a grade for each stage.

The method and the process used in the formation of the project are considered to be more important than the final design presented to the final jury. Therefore, students will be expected to be present on the online courses and participate to discussions during studio hours. Online class hours will be essentially used for criticizing the work achieved by the students at home and not for drawing projects.

Work Schedule

The work schedule is as follows:

Grading system

Students will have to attend all the pre-juries and make a minimum number of panel presentations in order to get a grade for each stage; those failing to fulfill these requirements will not receive a grade for the relevant period. More presentations will certainly help the improvement of the project; therefore increase the chance of receiving better grades.
